Diethyl phthalate (DEP) is a phthalic ester. It is a colourless liquid without significant odour but has a bitter, disagreeable taste. It is more dense than water, insoluble in water, and soluble in most organic solvents. Diethyl phthalate is used as a solvent and vehicle for fragrance and cosmetic ingredients, as well as an alcohol denaturant.
